The Only Stories We Can Change

As I said at the start of this chapter, the stories we tell ourselves are about power. About our ability to change our lives in the course of a semester, or a weekend, or in an hour.

Or right now.

The bus wrecked with my students on it. I can’t change that.

But I can write the story of what happens next.

You can’t change your childhood abuse. It happened.

But you can own and determine the next chapter.

You can’t change how your mom screamed at you, how your dad hit you, or how your wife left you in the ashes of a broken home. There is a period at the end of those sentences.

You can’t change the story of what happened.

But you can change the story of what comes after.

You have that power.

In fact, it’s the only power you have.
